New South Wales - NSW Central West Route (version 1.6)
Route design by Chris Nelson and Brian Bere-Streeter (v1.6 scenery upgrade)

This route captures the wide open expanses of Australia's outback perfectly. The route starts at Orange East Fork (320km west of Sydney) and heads northwest to Dubbo (460km) via Wellington; the alternate route via Molong (Molong - Dubbo closed in 1985) is also modelled. The Orange - Molong line is part of the western mainline from Sydney to Parkes and Broken Hill.

Total mainline trackage: ~330km.
Stations and sidings: 32.

Molong was the terminus of the main western line from Sydney from 1886-1893. The 129km branch line railway from Molong to Dubbo opened in 1925 and basically paralleled the main Orange - Dubbo railway while serving the many communities along the way. Operations ceased in 1985 except for 2 km at Molong that is used for a passing siding on the main western line to Broken Hill.

During the steam period, banking was prevalent between Orange and Molong, as well as south from Dubbo on the Wellington line.

Passenger services included: The Central West Express (Sydney to Dubbo), The Indian Pacific (Sydney to Perth via Molong), Forbes and Coonamble Mail.

Heavy wheat traffic could be found on both lines. Interstate traffic became more common with the introduction of the Standard Gauge to Adelaide in 1969.

Steam was all but removed from this area on main line traffic in 1968, with the shunters being withdrawn in 1971.

The route has been significantly upgraded by Brian Bere-Streeter who has added track and scenery items. Trackage added includes the North Fork from the Molong line round to Orange station, the missing cross-overs to allow Coonamble and Merrygoen passenger trains to run direct into or out of Dubbo platform from those two branches and a fair bit of work at Troy Junction, adding multiple stock loop sidings and the Dubbo Meat Works sidings.

Prototype Operator: New South Wales Government Railways and its successors.

Complete Install of v1.6:
Note there are two files:

Note #1: This method of installer preparation reduces the time Vista and some anti-virus programs may take to scan the EXE file.

Note #2: you may need to right-click and "Save Link/Target As" on the .D0x files to save them to your hard disk instead of having them open in your browser.

Note #3: read "Additional Files Required" further down this page: you will require more files.

File Sizes

.EXE file:    1.08 MB (1,137,593 bytes)
.D01 file:    56.1 MB (58,884,327 bytes)

Additional Files Required

  1. Xtracks 3.20 or higher
  2. Newroads 4.0 or higher

Tasks Required

  1. Download the two files linked above; ensure both files are in the same folder in your PC.
  2. Run the installer by double-clicking on the EXE file (do not touch the data file - .D01 - the installer EXE will load the data pack itself). The installer is automatically set to "Run As Administrator" for Vista and Windows 7 users.
  3. This installer will replace the original Central West route. You are strongly advised to delete or move any previous versions of this route before undertaking installation of this updated version.
  4. You must have all six default routes installed BEFORE running this installer. The routes just need to be present: they DO NOT need to be unstored if you use Trainstore, nor do you need to activate them if you use Route Riter's ON/OFF utility.
  5. You must have Xtracks 3.20 or higher installed.
  6. You must have Newroads 4.0 or higher installed.
  7. Allow the batch file to run to completion. If you do not see this batch file run in a DOS box, you most likely are a Vista or Windows 7 user. TURN OFF "User Account Control" (Start | Control Panel | User Accounts | Turn User Account Control On or Off); then right-click on the installme.bat file in the Route folder and set "Run As Administrator". The batch file should now run correctly.
  8. The first time you run this route, there will be a short delay as MSTS "generates terrain buffers" - this is a one-off and subsequent use of this route will load normally.

Short goods arrives at Dubbo West.
